how about applying brake cleaner before putting chain lube?

Not the best idea in the world I'm afraid. You will strip off all the old excess lube and the chain will look nice and pretty but the damage you would do to the O-ring(or x-ring) seals would only shorten the life of the chain in the long run. :cry:
There are a lot better less damaging cleaners on the market which would be much wiser to use.

Just for reference, Wurth do a break cleaner which is sh#t hot and is safe on all the rubbers and plastics we've tested it on at work. Used correctly I'd have no reservations using it on chains. (I don't work for them, honest)
