I use my tmobile htc phone to do the same thing. I downloaded a wee bit of software that turns the phone into basicly what you have there (a mobile wifi hotspot) http://global.wmwifirouter.com/consumer/.
I dont have to pay a monthly fee or anything as my tmobile account has a fair use policy which covers pretty much what I need.

im a big fan of htc
used to love the tytn2 i had was quite possibly the best phone ever when new tomtom6 was wicked and all the data connectivity and ouffice outlook
it even survived being droped in the bath and also falling out a pocket at 40mph or more with no damage

Ive go the mda compact iv
Love it, does everything I need a phone to do and more. However I have a hanckering for an iphone. I see tmobile are now doing iphone's on contract. My renewal aint till may though so I might see if I can pick up one on eblag or somewhere.
