Hello everyone.
Just purchased myself a 98 Firestorm in Yellow. It has covered the grand total of 1100 miles or so in it's nearly 13 years!!
Do you lot reckon the camchain tensioners need replacing yet? Or should i finish running it in first?
Anyway looks to be a great forum with loads of useful information. Looking forward to spending a bit of time here.
John

regardless how many miles it's done, the tensioners are still 12 years old m8.
they could fail at any time or not at all.
your choice, but if it was me i'd fit a pair of manuals in and have done with it.
also, has it still got the original tyres on???? they'll be rock hard by now!

Welcome John, sounds like you've got a buck there, shame it's not a RED one lol. From what i've picked up on here the front cct can fail due to standing and a build up of condensation, should i say will fail as your bike fits the bill. Should have it done while it's off the road. Plenty of help on here but look in the Workshop section first.

Think you are right. May as well get it done while the weathers crap. New set of tyres too no doubt. Not looking quite so much of a bargain now! Well worth it once done though.

Hello.
It will cost you about £45 to the Cct so not much really. That's if you doubt yourself. The only other knowledge you need to know is red ones are indeed the fastest.

You beat me to it Benny, I'm so slow on these things lol,it's interesting what you say about tyre's going hard with age as i bought another RED vtr in the spring,(for my lads to ride) a 2000 reg with 7000 on the clock and been stood a long while. I set the suspention etc up same as my own and they ride totaly different. Tyres did cross my mind.

Aye Up John, welcome to the forum
I would replace the cam chain tensioners too.
You can either:-
(1) Fit new standard Honda CCT's.
(2) Fit manual type adjusters.
(3) Fit new standard CCT's with the stopper mod.
If you've not already, before you do anything have a read of this thread:-

If it's been standing for long periods, as seems likely given the age and mileage, I'd also be thinking that the carbs could do with a clean, as old stale petrol leaves deposits in jets and float bowls.
And the battery isn't going to be too long before it needs a change, as well.
But it's the CCT's, as Benny says, that would give me the most concern.
Each to his own, but TBH replacing with new originals is still playing with fire.
It's not IF they'll let go, it's WHEN.
So stoppers or manuals, as has been said.
But you might be lucky, some seem to go on and on.
Did I mention I had some spare engines I can sell?
Anyway, welcome, that must be the lowest mileage one on here.
