CCT pictures for college

Hi guys and gals all ready for chrimbo?

I am doing a project towards my Mech eng HND and decided to centre a project on the VTR CCT problem as it is a perfect example of a big manufacturer making a crap product and the customer having to work round the problem (plus i love bikes). I have loads of info already (being an ex Firestorm owner) but it would be great to have a picture of the rear end of the tensioner with the cap in/removed (opp to plunger end), also can anyone remember the bolt spec to lock off the plunger. If anyone has done a HNC/degree you will know how much work is involved and any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for any help offered.

I have a spare (still working, with intact spring [for now]) standard tensioner if you want a borrow?

Not sure that a photo down the end cap bolt would show much, TBH.

(not the way I take photos, anyway).

Re the bolt spec, I assume you mean the little tee-shaped piece that comes with new ones?

There's a diagram in the Haynes, I can scan it if you haven't got one.
Sure it's also on here somewhere, though.

I have one, but only one left and I use it fairly often, so that's not up for a loan, I'm afraid.
I use it to establish how much plunger is poking into the engine when setting up stopper mods- if you measure the old one then you can set the plunger length to a little bit less and it'll fit straight off.

HTH if I can, done dozens of these now, manuals, stoppers, replacements, etc.

I can also provide engine internal shots, tensioner blade pictures, etc, as I have several spare engines on the bench at the moment.

Good choice of project, for the degree thesis, how about manufacture and supply of airflow-tested airbox modifications with air scoops, ram-air, etc?
Lovely fluid dynamics calculations to be had there, worth loads of credits :lol: :lol: :lol:

Bah Humbug Jim :lol:

There are two versions of the bolt mod that lock the Firestorm CCT off.

(1) The type Tony Wilde uses is a 6mm X 30mm (although I prefer to use a bolt 40mm in length opposed to the 30mm)


(2) The type VtrBob uses is a 6mm bolt drilled and tapped to take a 4mm bolt down the center. It's the 4mm bolt that has the flat blade ground on the end of it.

:eek2 :eek2 Now that would take some work! :lol: Thanks for the offer mate, I was after a good picture of the modded bolt with ref to the blade end and how it interfaced with the CCT, also the thread pitch of the CCT bolt end. :thumbup:

Mike that is brilliant , if it was a clear piccy it would be perfect. It will end up in my portfolio so if anyone has any copyright issues please let me know (I will not be cashing in by the way, just producing a quality project with a valid engineering problem/solution. :thumbup:

Thanks Chris, good info and a possible alternative size solution.
So far I have four solutions:

New CCT (no idea of service schedule reliability)
New spring for old CCT (lots of possible issues)
Bolt stopper mod, (best solution me thinks).
Manual CCT.

Mike, that sounds like a lot of work, dont go to that trouble just for piccies! I will PM you my email if you happen to remove one.
