just read on another site that an Oxford Optimiser caught fire today whilst being used,luckily someone was in the garage at the time,and could deal with it. might be worth a quick checkout if you own one .If you have any doubts at all unplug it.
The owner is getting in touch with Oxford ,see what they have to say.

My dealings with Oxford's customer service was pretty rubbish...but it will be interesting to see what they say....

Remember to unplug from the bike if you have uplugged the charger from the mains supply. If you dont, it will slowly discharge the battery.

This happened to me some while ago. Lucky I was around when it started to smoke. They have a fault around the area where the wires come out of the units. They are so fragile the the outer cable covering tends to split and allow the 2 wires to make contact.
I would never leave one switched on in a garage under my house. Please if you are using these , just check the cable casing where they exit the main body thast where they tend to split.

better check mine, had a spare battery on it for the last 18 months!!

So true! I had mine on my mower and I was in the garage and smelt burning. Bloody thing was melting and burning just where you state.

I was going to re-wire it...not sure now...
