Hi im chris, This looks like a great forum, credit to you guys, im a moderator for 'lincsrideouts.co.uk' a great forum for anyone lincolnshire based for local event's and group rideouts every weekend WP (weather permiting).
Im going to be a 'stormer' very soon i hope, Im in the process of selling my beloved GSXR 600 Srad for a vtr.
I've been after a twin for a while, I've test ridden an SV650, SV1000 and recently rode my step-brothers 97plate Firestorm, which was alot better than the 56 plate SV1000 in every aspect, mabey a digital dash is better but thats about it.

I hope you guys dont mind giving me your opinions on the Vtr i've found, which ive put a deposit on.

I was'nt in a hurry to buy a vtr as the weather is inevatably deteriorating and biking days will not be as appealing, but I think if genuine this is a great example of a vtr.
I really wanted a silver one but you cant have every thing. I questioned the seller (carbontek, nr croydon ) as to weather the cam tensioner had been replaced and hes informed me that when he took it for the MOT he thought it was a bit rattly and has had it replaced ,has receipt for tensioner to show me. He say's if im not happy after taking for a test ride he'll refund deposit, so nothing to lose apart from fuel to get there and back 300 miles, £70 approx.

Any buying tips on what to look out for? I've heard of notchy gear changes, rotting down pipes and after studying your forum r/r issues and the 6000 rpm flatspot issue.

What are your thoughts, comments please, ???

First thing would be to remove that horrible grab rail and find a pillion cover as it has'nt got one.

Check the threads here on Cam Chain Tensioners, and at the first opportunity replace the OEM tensioners with manuals for complete peace of mind. Also if it is fitted with an unfinned Regulator/Rectifier change it pronto to an upgraded finned one as fitted to later Storms or similar.

When you get to look at it check rear linkages as the bearings can corrode, same for the starter motor lead as it enters under the rubber hood. The front downpipes always go a shitty brown colour but the steel doesn't 'rot' - where it can be a problem is the occasional weld can hole in the header section.

Looks like a good price and value for the milage - I went with a friend from Essex to nr Grimbsy where she bought a similar milage, but crash repaired one for £1700 .

I’m sure others will deal with your technical query, but I’ve chipped in to say that I’ve just joined your Lincs ride out forum!

I live near Melton and my favourite ‘route’ is east to Bourne and then on to Spalding… I just love it! There’s everything from tight combination bends through to mile long straights surrounded by beautiful scenery. Anyway I’m sure you know this already… I’ll shut up now!

Incidentally, my take on the storm is that it’s a relatively ‘simple’ beast that even I can take to bits and figure out, thus it’s a winner… with no none essential elec-trickery to spoil the fun.

edit to mention...you won't be winning any MPG challenges on a storm!!!

if the bikes geniune then its a very cheap bike, it's alarmed, it's got a set of cans, a nice set of power bronze lower fairings, the mileage is good the condition looks good, i'd think about keeping the grab rail, makes it easier to put on a paddock stand if you have one.
you can pick up the single seat covers on ebay for £25 you just have to wait for a nice black one to turn up. all in all a nice bike. make sure he's done the cct's, hopefully he's put manuel ones on although i doubt it.
the one thing i would add is a hugger and surprisingly i have 2 for sale at the moment, one brand new (black) from the usa and the other is 2nd hand fake carbon fibre which is very cheap because of a tiny bit of melting where it touched the exhaust.
huggers aside good luck with the bike, it looks like a bargain to me..........

what MPG are we looking at:?: My step brother rekons 110miles a tank, i can live with that ,my srad was dyno jetted and only did 120 miles per £20 of fuel.

That's not a lot of money is it, definitely worth a look I'd say.
Most things have been covered. As for the gear change being clunky, 1st to 2nd is the worst. To minimize this change up into 2nd from 1st gear asap, making full use of the torque. Chain and sprockets being in good condition will also help, as well as the chain being adjusted correctly. Check also for worn cush drive rubbers if you do have a look at this bike, if they are worn the rear sprocket will move with the rear wheel standing still, if they are in good condition the rear sprocket won't move forward or backwards without the rear wheel moving.

it looks like a good,clean honest bike m8,it looks like all the little niggles they have has been covered by the lads on here too, but if not,have a shufty in the knowladge section..

Phase one of operation 'firestorm' complete the guy from Hull loved the gsxr, its gone. I know its plastic, nuts and bolts but I have alot of happy memorys on that bike. Hopfuly pick the firestorm up next friday or saturday.

Im getting confussedto the point of not bothering with the vtr am I right that once i have this nike i need to check the cct's and do a r/r modification?
I have not got the bike yet and im putting doubts in my mind that im not buy ing someone elses problem
