HELP ME PLEASE

Post by clinty »

hi all i need help with a engine proble on my 1998 vtr firestorm.
i have had the bike a week and until yesterday it was great then all of a sudden i was going down the road and i could hear a loud ticking sound so i pulled into the local garage and it cut out with a nice sounding pop. it will start but the noise from the bottom of the engine is a very loud ticking sound. i have never had a v twin so i am not sure what it could be. i have checked spark plugs and standard things like that.i dont know weather it is the timing chain or ajuster but i could really do with some help with this.

Thanks all

sounds too much like the CCT failure...............dont start the bike, it causes more damage.

the test is to take the 8mm nut off the back of the CCTs and get a small screwdriver in there. When you try and unscrew the inner screw you should feel it is spring loaded and will screw back in if you let go, if not spring loaded it has failed. as only one CCT will have failed, you will be able to feel the difference between the 2 if there is a failure, if they both feel the same, it is not the CCT

there is one on each cylinder, the rear one is easy to see on the back of the cylinder above the rear brake master cylinder.

once you have worked out what it looks like your can then look for the front one which is on the gear side and pointing up at the carbs.

A couple of extra instructions are:

1) it is best to set each cyl at TDC before you unscrew the CCT to be sure the chain wont jump a tooth on teh sprocket, but if you dont turn more than 3/4 turn to feel the spring you should be OK............do not remove the CCT if the cyl is not at TDC
2) you have to follow the instructions in the workshop knowledge base to set TDC, and it is different for each cylinder.
3) you will need to take teh tank and airbox off to have good access to the front CCT...........it is normally the front that fails

TDC is top dead centre. Check the knowledge base thread on CCT's.

if you caught it in time just replacing the cct will fix BUT if you didn't you'll of had piston to valve contact bending the valves...turn the engine by hand to see if it locks up...

in the alternator casing you'll see two allen key covers..behind the large cover is the crank bolt...use a socket and ratchet to turn it anti clockwise...it will stop turning if the valves are bent

Take the plugs out so you can fell any resistance easier, hope it is not damaged, but because you re started it there is a bad chance you have bent the valves
