Carb clean

Post by Miztaziggy »

So how do you do it?

Buy an aerosol and spray in the air intake, or take them apart and clean properly?

you spray it into the trumpets while it's running, keep the throttle open as it'll die when the cleaner hits it....do it outside too as it'll kick black smoke out..

Or you can strip em and get some compressed air in there to do the job properly. If you're going to do that though you need to do every jet and all channels/holes etc. It's not a 5 minute job.

Hmm I think I prefer the spraying in trumpets idea....

Might try that first :D

Zig, you could take them to Paul at Dynobike and make yourself a coffee whilst he does it all for you. His rates are good and its a nice ride up there too :) Plus you'd get a dyno run.

heh :)

Well, I haven't done it on the storm yet, just on the bandit. The springs on the storm's carbs are a *very naughty word* to get back in though by the looks of it. Very long and wiggly.

I'd suggest a strip. The carbs come off pretty easily on these bikes, and then you can see what wear, if any, there is.
Spraying cleaner on oval needle jets won't help.

For the cost you'll do well to replace the needle jets, and maybe the needles, too.
Be careful if you take the slide tops off, as the springs bounce out quickly, and are a pain to get back in.

Maplins have a good sized ultrasonic jewellery cleaner, which would be big enough to clean up any carb parts overnight, but you would have to be prepared to take the carbs apart, i.e separate them from the frame they are mounted on. I think it's less than £30, and uses plain water to clean up any part that will fit in the reservoir.

But as it's a plastic reservoir don't use any petrochemicals, such as carb cleaner, in there.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Sounds like a better idea than doing it all myself...

How much did he charge?

Well for me, £170 but that was a full afternoon, 4 dyno runs and 3 carb rebuilds using 2 sets.

He seemed a very honest bloke so I'd suggest giving him a call and see what he says.
