Just had me throttle jam fully open on the A40

Post by Pantaloonie »

:eek2 Excuse me whilst I go and change my underwear.... :eek2

That wasn't much fun - I was just coming home from work, heading out of London on the A40.
I was "making progress" as they say, shut the throttle to avoid plowing into the Datsun doing 45mph in the outside lane, and she just kept accelerating.
Good thing there were no plod around, I had to swerve to the inside lane and just keep going through the Hanger Lane underpass, brakes on and still accelerating.
Came out of the underpass, hit the kill switch and headed for the side of the road...
I had a poke around to ensure the cable hasn't fouled, doesn't seem to be. After opening and shutting the throttle a few times, started her up, and now the throttle seems to be jammed around a quarter open. Managed to ride the rest of the way home like that, not far fortunately. Got a few odd looks sitting at junctions with the engine idling at 4000 rpm.
Sooo... tomorrow, I'll have to investigate. I've been having problems for a few weeks with what feels like a fuel starvation problem at speed. Anything over legal speeds for more than a minute or so, and she starts to bog down. Slow down, and she picks up again. I'm thinking perished rubber diaphragm in the carbs for that one. Don't see how that could cause the throttle to stick though.

check the throttle cam hasnt broken inside the twistgrip and the return cable is ok....
also check nothing is fouling the return on the cam on the carbs..
a mate did that after fitting a different fairing to his suzy and a metal cable clip had fallen off and got stuck on the linkage, wedging it fully open.

i believe marlboman ian had a similar one last year caused by dodgy heated grip wiring 8O

Had everything stripped on mine and that was the general assumption mate, BUT this has me WORRIED AGAIN now as couldnt find anything wrong, Apart from the chaffing to the heated grip wiring. mines off the road now till next year, although i did get a sly ride out last week lol Will be double checking again before its next use lol

Well, I've had a poke around and all seems ok with the cable and throttle grip assembly, it's all moving as it should.
I started it up, and it's now idling around 1800 rpm. Took it round the block, and it's unrideable - feels like the throttle is connected to the engine by an elastic band, revs climb slowly and drop even slower. I think the problem will be in the carbs, connected no doubt to the problems I've been having over the last few weeks.
At this point I'll give up and hand it to my local bike shop. They can fit my new C&S and brake disc while its there (moved the bike with a disc lock on, and buckled the disc. Feels like a bucking bronco now when I hit the front brake.)
There goes my Xmas beer money...

If the cables are moving normally it is starting to sound like a sticking throttle slide, dont think a damaged diaphram could be slow to close [only slow to open].

Hope the dealer finds someting obvious, as it will always be on your mind when you are riding
