Just found this on the Ducati Forum, posted by SAM

"I didn't see you" may actually be true :eek2
Subject: Inertial blindness

Lack of motion Induced Blindness (pilots and drivers too)

Good info and demo. Lack of motion Induced Blindness was presented as a flying issue, but one can also miss things (pedestrians, motorcycles, other cars) while driving, so, keep your heads and eyes moving. The below link is a great illustration of what was taught about scanning outside the cockpit when military pilots went through training they were told to scan the horizon for a short distance, stop momentarily, and repeat the process.

This was the most effective technique to locate other aircraft. It was emphasized repeatedly to not fix one's gaze for more than a couple of seconds on any single object. The instructors, some of whom were combat veterans with years of experience, instructed pilots to continually "keep your eyes moving and head on a swivel" because this was the best way to survive, not only in combat, but from peacetime hazards (like a midair collision) as well.

The most dangerous target is the one that has NO apparent motion. This is the one you will hit without evasive action and also the one you will NOT see as presented below.

This advice had to be taken on faith until technology produced the display linked below.

That's why when I'm on approach to a side junction with stationary traffic waiting to turn I start weaving side to side like when you worm your tyres up .
So I have more visible impact to the waiting traffic .it has always worked for me so far apart from once when I got a tug from a copper as he thought I was pissed .but at least he saw me and didn't pull out on me

another fact - you can't judge the speed of an oncoming vehicle if it has it's headlights on.
this was proven as part of the argument against compulsory daylights many years ago.
all your brain recognises is the light, not the speed.

agree with making yourself more visible at junctions - road positioning is very important and reading the positioning of others.
it must be working as we're all still here lol.

thing is, we all know, you could have headlights on, dayglo jacket and an illuminated flashing christmas tree on your helmet but if someone doesnt bother to look they wont see you.
there is no accounting for the stupidity of some people.

a good point is that causing death by reckless driving now carries a 5 year jail sentence, but the bad thing is - saw some stats on fb on this the other day - out of 233 motorcyclist deaths caused by negligent / reckless drivers, only 4 were given the 5yr term. the rest got between 18mth, suspended sentences, points & fines.

This a fine concept as an idea, however as most of today's drivers especially in towns, are far to busy to keep looking around....there's the...

Prat nav on the dash....

The mobile in hand.....

Fag on the go......

Kids to scream at in the back....

The small dog running side to side along the parcel shelf.....

The ear splitting tecno blearing out....

The row with the wife/girlfriend/mother-in-law/husband/boyfriend/father-in-law ect......

Twice this week as I have pulled up at a T-junction give way line to turn right, a vehicle has pulled out from behind me, overtaken me on the wrong side of the junction & without stopping & therefore not looking, pulled straight out. I wouldn't mind but it's not like I hang around, so I'm not exactly holding them up........one day they will kill someone doing that. Unfortunately it will probably be some poor sod on a bike.

Having said that I very nearly took out some prat on a ped the other day as he shot out on to a roundabout in front of me...You know the type, hoodie, trainers, MX lid, no gloves & foot out straight as he turns. Probably buy a Corsa when he turns 17 init......

The irony is that they couple the comment 'Didn't see the bike' with the comment 'The bike was going too fast'. Hmm, so how did they see how fast it was going if they didn't see it!

When i did my snipers course back in the early eighties we were told to search for targets the opposite way that you read, so if you read from left to right, then you do a visual sweep from right to left, your eyes are used to reading L to R and will do it smoothly and fairly quick, if you look from R to L it makes your brain pay more attention as its not "normal" behaviour, try it, look in front of you around 200mt, keep your head still and just move the eyes, do it both ways , from R to L will be jerky and you cant do it fast, so your brain pick up more infomation, ie potential hazzards or in my case targets, how you would relate this to the bike f..k knows :wtf: but hey...

Did you manage to shoot many bikers in the eighties?

Why would you target them anyway :(

I don't get it :confused
