How many miles left when the red light comes on?

Post by Image »

Very important question this so I'm sure it's probably been asked on here before so apologies for that, but how many miles left in the tank when the red light comes on? Mine does approx 100 miles from full tank to red light but it's be nice to know how far I've got on the red light.

Not enough as I've found out when trying to get from Leicester to just past Bury St Edmunds and a fuel oasis, plus you'll find it's an amber light!

Carry a fuel can as an extra reserve and try to see what you can eke out before conking out
It may be that your whole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.

The only way is to carry a can and run it out. My bikes on standard gearing and going steady(no more than 80 mph) light comes on about 125 miles . Check how many litres you need to fill it on a 16 litre tank when your light comes on . But I recon mine is 15/20 miles at best.

you must take it real steady for that mileage, best I have done is between 100 and 113, worst was 80..

I figure on about 20 miles after the light is on, then i start to panic

At 100 miles it will take between 11 and 12l to fill, so I should have 4 left which should be good 33miles based on the same mpg, but never sure if there is really 16 l above the fuel tap.

According to the MCN review at;

http://www.motorcyclenews.com/MCN/biker ... 997--2005/

the storms tank range is 146 miles which would suggest after 100 miles and the light coming on that I've got 46 miles left. Having said that, these reviews tend to be based on a roller at a steady 54 mph. Also it could be based on the newer 19L tank.

I ran out once. Orange light came on at 104 miles and I ran out after 133 miles. Luckily I was near a petrol station so only had to push it 150 meters or so.

That was just riding normally after the light came on.

Spot on Jazzpot, that's exactly the answer I was searching for. So I can reasonably say 130 miles then. That's something to go on and to be safe let's say 25 miles when the orange light comes on. Not that I intend to go close to the margin or anything but it gives me a marker of when to panic :eek2

In my experience 20 miles is the most you can bank on after the red light of doom comes on !!

I was wondering about the milege the other day.

Is that MCN link specifying all at 'speed limit' riding...?

Top speed 144mph - I've been 150 I am sure :?

I’ve been 155 as shown on the clock, but unfortunately bragging rites went because 1) top speed is only 144, 2) my dyno guy said the speedo says 85, but really doing just above 70. So that’s approximately 15% out, so I was really doing high 120's, not my suspected 155

What a bummer

Amusing.. ios this true of most speedos (bike make model non-specific) ?

I gather cars tend to read a bit high (3-4 mph)

Earkier Storms with 16l tanks also didn't have the inlet restrictors, so were tested at 155 (and 157.5mph in one Ride review). Later ones are down on powe and are nearer to 144 mph.

On the 16l tank models, much will depend on the angle of the sensor float in the tank as to when it comes on and therefore how much further you can go..

My TDM speedo reads 80 when I'm doind about 71 on the sat-nav, whereas the Jag is only ever about 2-5 mph out.

Both points will also depend on your gearing, of course.
Two bikes, still only four cylinders!
