How to replace the air filter
How to replace the air filter
I have recently bought a 03 Fire Storm - its coming up to 17,000km which is when the manual recommends replacement of the air filter/s.
I havent been able to find any on line structions on the steps to getting to the air filter, where is actually sits, what should be done and there is nothing in the manual.
Any assistance or instructions would be greatly appreciated - also any recomendations on type or brand of filter I should go with.
cheers

Re: How to replace the air filter
Its under the tank mate.
Take off the seat, remove the 2 8mm bolts holding the front of the tank down, and you can lift the front of the tank and support it without removing it completely.
You can then remove the top of the airbox, 6 or 8 phillips head screws, and off she comes. the front part can be a bit sticky to remove, as it turns down behind the headstock. The air filter is staring you in the face now. Last time I bought an OE HOnda one for £25 from a main dealer, but you pays your money, takes your choice.
Good luck !!

Re: How to replace the air filter
Use a magnetic screwdriver when re-installing the front two screws in the airbox cover- they're easy to drop and lose.
Or a dab of silicon or grease on the end of the crosshead driver to hold them there while feeding them in.

Re: How to replace the air filter
i just lost one of mine but found it about 30 minutes later . all i got to find now is one of the little black spacers from under the tank front mounting bolts and a little allen key i was using to check the front cct which does not appear to have much springyness.
i am now quite fed up!

Re: How to replace the air filter
If you use a bit of silicon sealer you can "glue" the top hat fittings in place.
It stops them dropping out and getting lost as you lift the tank.

Re: How to replace the air filter
thanks guys - sound simple enough, thought there may have been a fuel tap, but could find one & doesn't sound like I need one anyway.
Re: How to replace the air filter
Look under the 16L tank from the front, there's a fitting at the rear with pipes attached.
The 8mm square stub facing forward is the fuel tap; turn it until it stops.
Don't forget to turn it back on again after you've finished.
However, because it's operated by engine vacuum it should turn itself off when the engine's not running anyway.
The tap mechanism is really only useful if the tap diaphragm fails, and fuel just flows out until it's turned off manually.

Re: How to replace the air filter
Burner looking at your Avatar pic your bike is the same as mine post 2001 19l tank, so it won't have a tap. I just clamp the line off when I remove the tank.

Re: How to replace the air filter
Thanks Kev - it is an 03 model, so 19 ltr tank.
Another dumb question - but there is no reserve tap or switch?
Just that the other day I ran out of fuel but filled up with only 14ltrs?

Re: How to replace the air filter
You ran out or the flashing bar on the gauges came on? I fill up when that starts and normally get about 13-14l in the tank. I don't think the VTR tank is very efficient at distributing the fuel it contains whilst the engine is very capable of burning what it it given!
