We moved into our house in January. The house is only 18 years old but by hell did the previous tennants not look after it.

We just fixed the bleedin roof and now I noticed the the sewage is backed up, I just lifted the cover

Anyone know what I should do, should I clear it out and try and unblock it or should I get someone else to do it, and how much does it cost?.

I am in the home maintenance game and would suggest that if you are talking about the manhole cover, best get the proper people to do it buddy

Ring them up and explain what the problem is, and ask for an idea of the price

Yeah it the outside one, I lifted the cover and saw the blockage has back right up to the cover, I dont think its anything major, just always worried about cowboys.

get yourself down to b&q for a set of drain rods and shove the pardon the pun sh1t down.
Had same problem but few hours it was sorted just make sure you wear ppe.And have a damm good wash after running hose and a power washer if you have one will help

I just had a word with the father in law and he said the same thing, he has all the rods, I also have a jet wash, plus a mate whose in the drainage bussiness whose coming to take a look, who I thought wasnt doing it anymore.

Don't get caught using a hosepipe as of tomorrow though. The Water Nazis are vatching!

And work backwards....so follow the sewage pipes away from your house and lift the next cover, if the blockage is still showing in that one move on to the next. You will find the blockage easier and then push the rods back towards your house. It's easier than running a long line of rods down the pipe and still not getting to the blockage..
Good luck.. I had to do this the very first day we moved into our house, and we had advised the previous owner he needed to sort out the drains as it showed up on our survey. It said it had been sorted when we took the keys....Not a happy chap, having to buy a set of rods when I should have been sorting out furniture,,,,

I'll let you all know how the SH** flows when we look at it today.

Cleared easy with a stick I've orderd a set of Bailey rods, pig tails, plungers and brushes for future use.

Ive had this same problem bought my house 7 years ago and got all my pipes and electrics covered via british gas,
my drain blocked 5 times in one year each call out was around £200 but the british gas paid all the costs ,then they sent a camera down and found a pipe had cracked so the waste was catching the crack then building up and blocking
british gas replaced it and there was no cost, we pay £30 a month for a home care plan worth every penny as the boiler we have is dodgy aswel
And no I dont work for british gas

just a quick word of warning,"and it's easy done" if you're using drain rods that screw together don't twist the rods when inside the pipes, or only twist it clockwise tightening the thread, i have seen people in the past unscrew the rods halfway down the pipe,then you have a problem

My mate already told me to tape the joints together with waterproof tape .
