alright lads, just sold the bandit and managed to pick up a vtr 1998 with 24k on the clock for 1200 quid, its tottaly standard and has just had 520 quid spent on it! picked it up and just got drenched but couldnt give a wombles becuase the bike was lovely

quick question for you guys in the know, it had 510 quid spent on it and the bloak says it had both cam chains replaced??? but looking at the receipt fook knows what he has had done?

heres the list
gasket tensioner
lifter assy, tensioner
gasket cylinder head
valve exhaust
cotter valve
and coolant

and at the top it says 'INVESTIGATE TOP END RATTLE, FOUND TIMING CHAIN HAS JUMPED TEETH, STRIPPED AND REPLACED WITH PARTS LISTED, CHECKED VALVE CLEARANCES'

wombles knows what it had done? confusing me lol. anyone have any ideas? on pay day its definately getting the manual cam tensioners though.

i was in two minds weather to get one or not becuase of the cct troubles and people saying they were crap lol, but after riding it, its bloody lovely, if it wasnt raining i would be burning around on it right now oooooooooh yeh

Huge duck, the bike had a cam chain tensioner failure and that bent the valves, hence the items on the repair list. You don't need new chains, they never stretch enough to need it, but if they have just put standard Honda parts back in, then you have just bought a bit of time before it does it again

what do you mean, i thought it was just the CCT's that failed?

Oh dear its had a cct failure and the piston has slapped and bent the valves

On this bike when the CCT fails the sprocket and chain will jump a few teeth and then the valves kiss the pistons. Two new exhaust valves needed and reads like the The repair has been done, so you will be ok, but you need to replace the Honda CCTs with either manuals or do the stopper mod.

Sorry I didn't meant on drop the news on you that your bike had bent valves

nah its fine, good to know
it was done at a kawasaki dealer and the bloak seemed legit so i cant see it being a problem, he's done a few k on it since and i gave it some on the way back and it didnt miss a beat, come payday i'll be getting some manual tensioners. so hopefully it should be ok

Yours sounds like its been sorted. Read the forum and search "cct failure" and "stopper mod" and "manual tensioners"

Sounds like you have a decent bike mate, just get to know it and keep it runner sweet just cos the 'bloaks" fixed it don't mean it won't happen again....

Hugeduck (quack quack) Welcome to the forum. I totally agree from what you have described and parts listed. The bike had a CCT failure. Hence the reason the head was removed, valves replaced, new head gasket etc etc. The previous owner is just lucky the valves did no make a hole in the piston. Otherwise the bill would be 3 times as much.

Stick around here and you can't go wrong, plenty of advice and guidance and members willing to help out.

The only other thing you need to look out for is the regulator rectifier. check the regulator rectifier to see if it's a finned version.

CCT's can go at any time, it's a gamble!
You can either go for the stop mod http://www.vtr1000.org/phpBB3/viewtopic ... 31&t=19416 Which is the Honda auto CCT's that are converted to a fail safe. So when it does fail, it don't send the valves crashing.

Regulator rectifier you will find attached to the subframe just behind the tail panel on the right hand side near the battery.

You only need 2 exhaust valves and a head gasket, plus maybe a couple of shims.

£250 all in, inc labour.

Ah well, it's done now.
Glad it's going well. And no. the chains were fine; never known one let go, and the new ones will have stretched to the same as the old ones by now....
