It's not symmetrical, but neither is the standard plastic one this replaces.
It's shaped that way to protect the shock but not hide the rear downpipe.

That's where I decided it's meant to go. The only problem I can see is that the standard one iirc makes contact with the swingarm. If this one does the same (I appreciate it may be slightly different so that doesn't happen) it will be metal rubbing against metal as the swingarm moves up and down.

Chric, your bike has a hugger fitted. Normally going on you remove that shock protector when you fit a hugger.

And just to confirm the standard plastic one does make contact with the swingarm. I looked this afternoon at the one removed from my bike, it definitely has rub marks on it from the arm,
