Hallo there!

Hi all, I'm the proud owner of a lovely yellow 1998 Firestorm, from Worcestershire. Glad to join your forum here and find some helpful fellow enthusiasts :)

A month ago I upgraded from my CBR400RR NC-29 after 4 years of owning it, and while I miss it a little the new 'Storm is something else!

She's got about 22k miles on the clock and started developing what I can only presume is the all-too-common CCT problem (bit of knocking and misfiring on the front cylinder), so I'm in the process of pestering Rider on a Storm for some of his manual CCTs. Guess it's either that or the plugs, but doesn't hurt putting in the CCTs anyway.

Also had some starting/charging problems, and being a previous Honda owner suspected the reg/rec... it all checked out and turns out it was the battery at fault. Replaced with a new gel-type one and all is fine and dandy!##

Enjoying the bike so much and wondering where v-twins have been all my life! Fan for life here...

BTW I'm vaguely handy with a spanner so if anyone in the Worcestershire area wants a hand tinkering with their storm etc I can help out, for tea/biscuit tax of course :)

Thanks again and see you in-topic ;)
Adam

Welcome to the forum Adam

Seems like you have done your research. Don't follow the Haynes manual for CCT's as it has errors in it.
there is a guide here View Topic http://www.vtr1000.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=8326 and plenty of threads on here regarding them so have a search about.

If the R/R is the original non fiined honda one then change it for one with fins as they have a nasty habit of overheating and frying batteries. You can put a CBR125 RR in as a straight swap or an R6 R1 one will fit with cutting the plug and using your own terminals.

Doesn't sound like it from that description, more likely carbs out of balance and poss, as you say, plugs need a change.

CCT probs sound like a ticking noise at certain revs, turning swiftly into a bag of spanners and small rocks being shaken next to your ear sort of noise, with the faint "kerching" of the dealer's till.

I must admit It didn't sound like CCTs to me either. Carb farts, misfires, tuning.
But then I thought O' well CCT;s will need changing anyway to be on the safe side, so let him get on with it and the other problem can get tackled then.

Thanks for the welcomes :)

It's got a barely noticeable ticking noise too, but I think that's just normal for the engine - I hear it's a loud one anyways. Even if they're OK now I'd rather sort the CCTs out while I'm at it because they're going to fail some day soon...

I'll be checking everything while I've got the bike apart, definitely changing plugs and I'll be checking carbs too, thanks :)

Thanks also for the recommendation on the reg/rec, I'll check it when I get a chance as the previous owner replaced it last year sometime. I'd imagine it's a direct replacement so I'll look into CBR125RR one I think - which year CBR125RR one fits?

I'm not sure if there is only particular years that fit, but plenty of people have fitted them on as direct replacements. Someone else will most probably be along to confirm.

Here a link for the R6 R1 if you decide to go down that route. I personally have a R1 R/R on mine.

It's alright cybercarl, I'll figure it out when I get a chance. Thanks for the info, and that's a really good guide for the R1 conversion :)

Yea I've tried to read up as much as possible, but there's sometimes conflicting information around and best to ask the people that know better!

And 16L definitely isn't enough! Well, unless you just topped up your tank and now have to take it off....

It is a direct swap mate ;-)

I fitted one off a 2007 model, it's exactly the same plug as the storm.

The R/R is about half the size again compared the the standard one which feels more reassuring too!
