Im on the verge of buying another storm after a year selling my last one.
I was wondering about the CCT's, is there a general mileage that these have a higher risk of giving up the ghost at? and is there anybody local to me that could help me do the required mod or replacement of them.

Hi I am not sure its a mileage thing, maybe age too if springs inside cct has been dry of oil if been stood for a while. I think they just fail at random. My bike had less than 2000 miles on it but was 12 years old so I changed them. Roughly where do you live?

I am pretty sure Honda recomend changing them at 25,000 miles. But I am not sure if they go at any point or not. Someone will be along soon to tell you.

It's best to change the CCTs for peace of mind to either manuals or do a stop mod. There seems to be no time for them to be at risk as some bikes have failed with low mileage and others have gone on for much longer. Things like heavy engine braking and leaving the bike running on the side stand for quite a long amount of time don't help.

CCT's can go at any time, it's a gamble!
You can either go for the stop mod http://www.vtr1000.org/phpBB3/viewtopic ... 31&t=19416 Which is the Honda auto CCT's that are converted to a fail safe. So when it does fail, it don't send the valves crashing.

Nope, you need to get them done as soon as possible after buying it, assuming that the one you buy isn't already converted.

Don't fall for the salesman's trick of telling you it's the later ones fitted, that are safe. There's no such thing.

Its a private sale so no salesman speech to worry about......the bikes a '98 with 23k miles and looks clean in the pictures and talking to owner its a clean bike. Whats the cost implications to the cct change or mod?
this isnt my main bike so cost is an issue or i could find myself divorced..lol

Bazza's converted CCT's (to manuals) are £35, others charge more, up to £60/70 I believe.
Modifying standard ones to stoppers so that they can still fail but not catastrophically is effectively free, but due to the work involved it's really in my opinion only worth doing to new ones.

Yeah, think your right there mate...replacement would be the sensible option

They have that effect, it's a Marmite bike, either love it or hate it. It's amazing how many people regret selling them, but only realise this after they have sold it.

If you are fairly mechanically minded and know one end of a spanner from the other then CCT's is not that big of a job. Should take you no more than an afternoon. Don't follow a Haynes manual as it has detrimental mistakes in it, but follow the instructions in the link above and you will be fine. Have a good read through the forum, do a search on cam chain tensioners as there are plenty of posts regarding them, And if you have any questions then ask away.

I am such a tight butt that I just did the stopper mod on my existing Honda CCTs and put them back on. Still ok 20,000 miles further down the road, so it's just luck of the draw, but the fact that it was free and still self adjusting wins the argument every time

Well, the new bike didnt materialize....... excellent condition the seller says!!!!!
drove 300 miles all in to see a bike that was crap.....it appears that excellent condition to some people includes crash damage.

Didnt think it would prove so difficult to pick up a descent storm.....

Now that would really wind me up, especially if you had spoken to te seller and he had failed to describe the real facts

There are plenty of decent ones, shame about that one.

Take your time and you will know the one when you see it.

That's unfortunate, what is the point in someone making out it's better than what it is. Did they think because you had to travel such distance you just buy it anyway.

Something will turn up soon no doubt. And at least you have a bit more time to read through the forum and get an idea of what you would like and the good and bad things to look out for.
