cutting out

Post by tattoo »

hi guys

on saturday i thought i'd take the storm for a run out as it's been layed up for a week or three,it started first push of the button and idled perfect at 1100rpm...after filling it up i hopped on the A1 for a quick blast to blow the cobwebes off her but it coughed and cut out after only 3miles,i left it 5mins and it restarted and even though it seemed ok i turned round and went home to give it a once over...checked the fuel pipes, vacuum pipes(small split so cut it out and refitted),wiring, starter post, battery and the R/R for charging and everything was good so went to check balance of the carbs and found the gauges read...late valve timing or leak at intake manifold or heat riser...so i rechecked all the pipes for splits/cracks again but found nothing so fitted the gauges again and got the same reading....checked the timing and everything was spot on..took it out this morning and it cut out after only 3-4 miles...any ideas please

Possible the floats are sticking and re-filling to slow?

How old are the plugs?

A change wouldn't harm if they've not been done for an age

new plug were fitted a week ago and the floats are free and clean....i've fitted all new vacuum and fuel pipes and the gauges still read "late valve timing or leak on intake manifold or heat riser"...i've balanced them before but this is the first time the gauges have show this reading and tbh it's puzzleing me as to why..

What balancers are you using it shouldn't matter what they read so long as its the same stable reading for both, i use a set that Benny has dual gauge ones off ebay, they have stuff on them but are not relevant to the storm, just check they are both making the same vacuum

have you put the vacuum line on the correct bit on the fuel tap, the one at the side not the bottom, with out it drawing vacuum there fuel will flow very slow

they are reading even on the gauges and i think we've all fallen foul of the right n wrong position of the vacuum pipe on the fuel tap...mine has a red line painted round it so i don't forget lol.

As Seb said syncing the carbs is just a case of making sure they are both level on the gauge. It's nothing to do with your valves. All a carb sync does is make sure that both both the butterfly flaps at the bottom of the carbs are opening in sync at the same time. Anyway out of sync carbs wont make the bike cut out unless they where ridiculously out of balance maybe. Even then I don't think the bike would cut out, but it would run rough. The other possibility is that your idle speed is set to low but you say it idled at 1100. Did you re adjust the idle after syncing.

What is a heat riser as you call it? :confused

I'm wondering whether it's some dodgy fuel. Was the tank very empty when you filled up. It may be worth trying some fresh fuel. Seems strange that it started after you filled up.

And no I have never put my vacuum on in the wrong place. :)

is it cutting out at high speed because mine kept doing it constantly at around 140 and it turned out to be the fuel tap diaphran back flowing fuel through a pin prick sized hole

wouldn't you notice a slow decline in performance over time not just a sudden wall of a problem?

when ive had filters in for a long while you can tell it wanted changing / cleaning, long before it got to the point of stopping the bike from breathing

Lets hope that solves your problem. It would have to be really packed with crap though to starve it enough to cut out on you the way it did. Did you just clean the filter or did you take the airbox off?

it did 240mls trip to cambridge and back 3weeks ago and apart from the odd spit back it didn't miss a beat...the airbox did have a misting of oil inside...i've cleaned both the filter and the airbox this afternoon and took it for a run and everythings normal again...

once again the storm cuts out at about 85mph..i've changed the fuel tap(fitted a service kit before changing)thanks jazz for the tap, serviced it..new oil, plugs, cleaned the air filter, fitted a long velocity stack(thanks gl_s_r ) and fitted 2 spare coils..with no difference...i'm wondering if the varadero reg/rec i have fitted is breaking down...any thoughts would be great as i'm moving soon and want to ride it to the new house

thanks

Sounds sporadic and my guess is a breaking down of RR. Seems you have checked everything fuel wise. Do you get any odd signs - my side stand light stopped working as well as clocks going blank. But I guess could affect ignition- equally as random?

Poss worth putting a new RR in- I've just got an R1 RR 07-08, £60 but happy. £40 for an earlier R1 RR that will still do a great job. Some spade fitting reqd but easy enough. Good luck. Griff.
