Harris Rearsets Fitment

Post by VTRDark »

I am in the process of putting my Harris rearset on the bike and have a problem. How do I attach the brake master cylinder and the brake light switch, I also need to know how the pedel return spring goes in place.

The master cylinder seems to only attach at an angle which is causing figment problems and I cant put it on the other side of the holes in the Harris plate as the hose gets in the way. Also the cotter pin that goes through is not long enough so I can put the split pin back in, but this I can get around by getting a longer one from somewhere.

Could someone please post some close up pics of how they have theirs set up or describe a way I can do this. Do the anniversary editions have a different master cylinder or am I missing some kind of attachment plate :confused I have searched the net all over for close ups of the rearsets on the anniversaries but can't find anything.

So by the looks of it the master cylinder being at an angle I can get around by putting the link on the other side and slipping a nut and bolt through, so that simple enough. But what about the brake light switch and the return spring for the pedal.

Right I'm off to get an allen bolt through the cylinder. So at least I will have a hear brake of some sort.

Cheers guys.

You may need to fabricate a spacer plate to line the master cyclinder up. As for the brake light switch I would think the easiest route would be an inline one attached as part of the banjo bolt on top of the MC. Did Harris make a race set-up as well as a road set-up? Just strikes me as odd they didn't cater for the road necessities.

If they are race ones they won't have a break light fitting. The in line banjo switch seems best bet.

Benny has Harris rear sets PM & ask for details.

Didn't the ad for them on e-bay mention missing spacers or something ?

I have a lump of Alloy sheet 10mm thick which can be used to make an alternative mounting point, should you need to.

I didn't realise they made a road or race version. And yes the add did say missing spacers BTH I havent a clue what spacers he was on about, so I presumed he meant spacers as in big washers to go behind then on the spindle.

Well I managed to get the master cylinder on, but the pedal ended up at a stupid angle as the length at the bottom is too short. I think one of those banjo type attached that Lloydie posed will be the solution there. 1st it will extend it and 2nd it will be a better figment where it attaches on the rearset.

have a look

As for the brake light I am going to have to look into that, it's also where the spring is going to attach on the pedal. Don't know much about the inline type so I will have to research that. And then there's the issue of how to attach the return spring on the pedal.

So all in all not a straight forward swap :(

Oh and something else.

Not that it makes much difference but it does mean I have to put either a spacer or a bunch of washers on the small allen bolt fixing point that's on the front as there is a gap behind.

I have put it all back to standard for the time being.

HI CARL
no there isnt an extra part to fit the master cylinder
the harris rearsetts should have spacer plates each side
i think yours arnt fitting because of this . ,
jonsey has my old set on his bike ,and i remember they are
unequal thicknesses as well .
chris should be able to furnish you with all the relevant info
that you need .

I've been out for ride today broken peg is no longer broken though it's a weak point. That's what I get for taking a big hammer to ally  Should be OK for tomorrow.

I think I have it sussed now a rose joint (not banjo as I called, not sure what the difference is) a bit of threaded bar and a couple of female threaded tubes. Then I can make it as long as is needed and it will be adjustable. Just got to work out the tread size. Maybe I will invest in a pitch gauge as it's something I have been meaning to add to the toolbox.

Then for the switch I can make a plate to go behind where the two holes are at the bottom and bolt the plate on from there, and if the plate is at a 90 degree angle I can drill a hole through it for the switch to go through and the spring can connect on the lever below near the peg.

So I just need to work out the return spring. :confused

Yeti those spacers you mention are just like big washers then with a groove cut out to fit over the bushes that poke out the ends of the swingarm where the bolt goes through then. I may get away without them or I may get some made up.

HI CARL
ref the spacers : yes  but its been a very long time
since i had my old ones on my bike they spent about 3yrs in a
box and then i swapped them with chris some time ago now ,
so i think thats right .
I seem to remember a piece of plate , bent over to take the brake
light and the spring should be the original .
i looked at your harris rearsetts on ebay and nearly went for them .
Im sure the seller did say they were incomplete ...... just not how
incomplete they were .

good luck .
and message chris for some piccies
