Speedo not working?

Post by Virt »

My friends' Honda CB500S speedo stopped working the other day, he replaced the speedo cable but it still doesn't work. We've asked people in our local biker group that we hang out with but no one really knows what the actual problem could be. Any advice?

Also yes, It's not my bike that's broken for once. Boo-yah!

I havent had to deal with this kind of problem for many, MANY years, but when I had my YB100, the speed drive thats in the front wheel had come loose as my step father in his well meaning cack handedness hadnt lined up the speedo drive and the tabs were actually pushed in by his caveman like shovel hands.

Worth checking.

Spin the front wheel with the cable off make sure the drive is turning if it is use a cordless drill with varable speed on the cable to see if the speedo moves start offf slow make sure you are going the right way first hope this helps.

The drive gear on the shaft/hub is easy to strip. so check that the teeth are in good condition. Sometime they're plastic.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Knew I'd forgotten to do something

He started the bike up for college yesterday and it the speedo worked fine, we have no idea why it stopped but he's followed the advice and (hopefully) made sure it doesn't happen again. Thanks everyone
