Idle dropping

Post by Sammyd »

The idle on my bike keeps messing about, it does need the carbs balanced and i have gauges ordered, when i bought the bike it felt like it was gonna stall so i checked up and the idle was to low(900), i adjusted the idle when she was warm to 1100 - 1200 rpm, this was fine for a couple of days then the idle dropped again and the bike was near stalling, could this be down to the carbs needing balanced or a throttle position sensor issue, only other thing i can think is that the screw for adjusting the idle is moving with the vibrations, has anyone else experienced this issue?

For now you will just have to raise the idle a bit but carb balance, adjusting the TPS and a general tune up is what you need. It's also worth giving the carbs a good clean out with some carbs cleaning spray if they have not been done. Make sure the air filter is not blocked. I doubt the idle adjustment screw is moving. You may want to sort out the front vacuum take off for ease of use with carb balancing while waiting for your gauges.

The idle adjuster doesn't move by itself, so it's something else.
If idle has dropped over the course of a day or so it sounds possible that you could have a split in a vacuum line, maybe in a diaphragm, either fuel tap or carb top diaphragms.
If it's still running apart from that then leave it until you get the balancer, and check it all at once.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.
