Eventually I dont have to have this stupid thing bolted on to my bike. It has always struck me as being completely redundant as the police can just check on their database whether you have tax or not!

Good - it seems to have been retained for as long as it was so traffic wardens could see if was on display. I wonder if they and others will in 2014 have a way of electronically accessing the databases.

I can't see the point of putting my tax disc on. The only place we'd found that we could properly mount the holder I bought, was on the inside of the exhaust/hanger bolt thing. Because of this it takes all of about 2 miles to become opaque and brown. Even if I put my tax disc in there they'd never know

Never displayed mine since I've had the bike - 12 years
Whenever stopped on suspicion of other heinous crimes coppers said just keep it in my wallet.

...reasons for failing to display were listed by the DVLA earlier this year, when it published the top 10 excuses for not renewing. They included "I fell out of a tree picking plums and broke both my arms", and "I took too much Viagra and couldn't leave the house".

My inner pessimist fears this will lead to an explosion of "number plate inspectors" with a corresponding hike in fines and 'points' for nonconformity.
Things never do get better.

I wonder when the new electronic tax reform comes about if the excise duty will still start on the 1st of the month or whether it will be a full 6 months or 12 months from the date of purchase.

Well there we go...rip off Britain at it's best. As Moocher said things never do get better.
A democratic society will always give with one hand and take with another especially when MP's have big heads ans pockets to fill.
