I am using a YTX12-BS and that seems to do the trick. Think it's 12v 10Ah and about 180A starting power if memory serves

Probably. Might not last long if it turns out to be underpowered. Just make sure the terminals are the right way round or bad things will happen :D

Not sure on the R/R. If it has the same connections (three from the stator and two more) then I would imagine so providing you can correctly identify all the wires. The plug may not be compatible with the existing bike one but some snipping it off and replacing with spade connectors with some vigorous insulation would soon sort that out.

Many threads from minds wiser than I on this subject. I just bought an R1 R/R off ebay for £20 and followed the guide in the workshop section.

cheers for advice, the blade r/r connections and code are the same so should be OK will test tonight?
only difference:
the original r/r had 7.5 on the second line, the blade r/r has 8.5 written on it??
also my original battery appears to have recharged,so i am going to check with multimeter over the next few days for voltage drop? before fitting to the bike, will use the blade one in meantime,i think i will be ok as long as not going to shop round corner and back, not giving the battery chance to recharge, take some cranking them twin engines!!
