chain lube

Post by budd »

just used up the last of my Wurth 'dry' chain lube and TBH not really impressed with it so won't be getting any more, I usually favour Motul products and Opie are doing Motul C2 'road' lube for £6.99 or C4 'factory line' lube at £8.99 (both 400ml) not sure what the difference is between C2 and C4 I know the factory line stuff is suposed to be higher quality but this is chain lube so how much difference can there be? I'll likely plump for the cheaper option (cos I'm tight northerner) unless someone csn tell me why the C4 is worth £2 more?? or Silkolene make good gear their 'pro chain' fully synth 'racing' lube also at £8.99, does anyone have any prefered / proven alternatives??

I have never been a fan of this chain lube waste i use oil all ways have all ways will its cheap as you all ways have some left over and lasts longer it doesnt flick up as long as you dont over indulge in it

Im sure il get slated for the above but that moi

I'm sure a decent oil whether engine or gearbox does a decent job of actually lubricating the chain which is after all the major requirement here, but it's incredibly messing, like I said I ran out of the dry stuff so I did indeed use a little spare engine oil, I figured it was better than nothing, I applied it using a pump oil can and very sparingly but it made a right mess, splatted all over, at least it’s easier to get off than ‘proper’ lube but for me it makes too much mess so I’ll not be repeating.
Back in the day everyone seemed to favour PJ1 ‘blue’ and I must admit I always found it a good balance between been thin enough to penetrate the links while resisting the dreaded fling, not sure if it’s still available, now leaning towards the Silkolene as it’s 500ml and not 400 like the Motul options.

I use old engine oil via a Loobman oiling system. it feeds to both sides of the rear sprocket as you ride, and you can choose how much or how little you apply so not as messy as hand applied.

Loobman only costs about £25 so is a total bargin

just ordered some Silkolene from Opie as it worked out cheapest, I’m sure there’s very little to choose between the different brands.
I'll keep a lookout for some PJ1 just for the sake of nostalgia, I’ll also look into the loobman system it may prove a good option in the long run.
