Front forks looking a bit shabby

Post by Jimmieec »

Hi guys and girls

In need of some advise on what to do with my front forks. They're pitted/corroded and are looking a bit kak at the minute, it's the only thing that let's the bike down.

Anyone refurbed theirs? I was thinking a very light gong over with some wet and dry then repainting in hammerite?

It's so annoying seeing the corrosion every time I jump on for a ride.

Any ideas chaps?

Right an easy peazee one...

Get your self a wire brush attachment for an electric drill.

Get the bike front end off the ground & remove the wheel.

Pop the black plastic fork protector things up out of the way, they just pop off & slide up. Tape them up out of the way. You can if you wish mask off the dust covers at the top of the fork lowers.

Attack the lowers with drill mounted wire brush & get all the paint off. You will be able to turn the lowers around to get at all sides.

When done with the paint removal, if you really want to, rub down with wet n dry.

Panel wipe to remove dust & grease.

Mask up & paint.

Job done. Have a cupper or beverage of your choice.

BTW I used Plasticote Black Gloss. Apparently available from The Range, B&Q no longer stock it.

As you can see Whilst I had the wire brush out I did the header as well.

+ in the link above to what Wicky did with his...Unless you have a stock of the old Nitromors...Don't waste your time with it the ''NEW Formula' is pants ! I tried it & left it on for ages didn't even bubble the paint.

If your worried about doing it with the forks in place you can of course take them out but then you have to find a way of hanging them up to spray & dry...

Oh & any threads I just cleaned them up afterwards with thread tap's.

Thanks for the swift responses, they look great in black!

Bigwinthing you got a picture of the whole bike to see how the black forks look with red (fastest colour)

Cheers

Now you've done the forks might as well do the swing arm too!

will have to do mine over the winter as there are a few stone chips.

I like the idea of doing the bottom section to the upper calliper mount in black, and the rest in silver, so it mimics the look of a USD fork leg
