TPS setting

Post by vtrjock »

Having just balanced the carbs and set the the TPS, I was surprised to see it originally set at over 800ohms. This was factory set with the security paint still intact.
I am planning to try it in a few increments to see if there is a marked difference.
I've started at the extreme end around 435 and found it much smoother in first, ticking over better (though this may be down to carb balance) and running quicker off the choke.
What setting are most guys running, 500? I'm not running a jet kit kit or filter but have open cans.
Curious as to how others find them when set differently?

Yep TPS is set according to emissions at the factory hence the high number. 500ohms is what the Honda workshop manual says to set it too. Others have experimented with other values but this has been mostly on highly modified engines ie engine work not just ancillary components.

How to Adjust the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS)

Note that adjusting the carb sync and/or idle screw also affects the TPS reading as both these are connected to the throttle plate which is where the TPS gets it's reading from.

FWIW, a former member of the Superhawk forum noted that the had adjusted the TPS on many VTRs and done numerous dyno runs, only to find that 430 ohms gave the best results.....
