Skimming Discs

Post by tattie »

Hi All,
Not been on in a while (just lurking about instead) as I have been bikeless for longer than I can stand. So I have been looking at a project "Firestormish", my question is can discs that have been fitted to a bike that have been sitting outside unprotected and unused for around 2 years be feasibly cleaned up by skimming?

Cheers for all the replies I will get in advance.

I expect it would depend on how much 'meat' is left on them in the first place...

By the time you have had them skimmed you might as well stick a set of 2nd hand ones on.

you can pick a decent set of second hand disc's up for not much money, but I can't see why unused disc's can't be skimmed, you'd have to work on the bobbins as well.

If it's only surface rust your concerned with then give them a clean up with some wet n dry, green scourer or something and then let the brake pads do the rest of the work. And bobbins should all move freely. Best way to do this is to take the discs off and put a nut and bolt through the bobbin, tighten and spin them around with a bit of brake cleaner/lube. Don't forget to give the disc a good wash if you use any wd40 or some other oily product. A shitty job as it takes time doing each one but well worth the effort.

As for skimming if your doing it yourself then yeh you could skim them as long as they remain within spec according to the manual. If you taking them to a machine shop to get skimmed then buying some cheap new or used replacements I would guess is better as it could be cheaper. If you do remove the discs from the wheel then be careful, very careful putting the dome head allen bolts back in as they snap easily. I personally don't do them to the required torque in the manual and do them up tight by feel along with plenty of threadlock.

My 2 pence Al, is forget about skimming brake disc's, different if they were like the disc's on old cars half an inch thick :)

Thanks for replies, the discs are on a low mileage bike that has been neglected lying outside for ages there is plenty of meat on them . I suppose the easiest thing to do would be to clean them up and give the bike a run to let the pads try to make it good, the only thought I had was that the section covered by the pads would be less rusty and give a grabby disc type feel when you were braking.
If this project comes off I will let you know how I get on.

cheers

Hi All,
Well the project "firestormish" will be happening, as I made the chap an offer and he has agreed to it. I just need to arrange to get it picked up and get organised.
I am looking forward to having a bike in the shed again, all be it one that is needing a bit of TLC.

Cheers

Good man, keep us posted with plenty of pics.

If the discs are too far gone give us a shout as I have a set sitting around doing nothing.

I am afraid I am useless when it comes to posting pictures so I might have to ask someone else to put them up for me.

If somebody can pm me with an email address that I could send a couple to, and they in turn could post them on here for me I would be most grateful.

Cheers
