CCT's - Again!

Post by mikeyvtr1000 »

Hi all,

Fairly new VTR member and new forum member. Read a lot so far and have a few questions regarding the CCT's.

First off, I'm fairly sure my 'bike used to belong to a member called chippy310 (http://www.vtr1000.org/phpBB3/memberlis ... ile&u=8302)
He hasnt been active for years but was going to PM him on the off chance to ask if they did the stopper mod but can't seem to. Do I need a certain amount of posts?

Is there any easy way of checking if the stopped mod has been done? I imagine I'll have to pull them from the 'bike. If I do this, will they need new gaskets? Does the cam cover need a new gasket?

After speaking to my mechanic and asking about the CCT's, he's convinced honda revised them recently and did their own stopper mod with a piece of rubber. Can anyone confirm this? I have some on order and may take them apart to check before fitting them.

Finally, I don't have a CCT key. Can anyone point me in the direction of some instructions to make one or how I can get around this? Why do I need to retract the CCT before removing it?

Any help is massively appreciated.

All info and answers to your questions are in the workshop sections (including the key) have a read through.

You can't tell for sure if stopper mod is done without stripping the CCT's, in which case you may aswell go through the correct procedure and do the mod. updated CCT's with rubber stopper ???? not heard that one, I've recently done a(nother) stopper mod on some CCT's that are 2 years old, they are just like the original ones, no stopper as standard and no updated from Honda in probably the last 10 years or more.

Print off the guides and give them to your mechanic so he knows exactly how to do them right, they are very useful.

Welcome...

50 Post minimum to use the PM system & access the sales & wants.

Std Honda CCT's are just that std Honda CCT's, the upgrade rumour is just that a rumour...

For piece of mind fit manuals ASAP gasket should be used but some will say high temp silicon will do the trick.

No gasket required on the cam cover it has a rubber gasket just make sure it seats correctly.

Have a good read through the workshop knowledge base re fitting manuals or doing the stopper mod.

Get manuals in ... Kreiger... or....Ape { USA } ...Kreiger from Holland... still
expensive though .. Bazza of vtr forum does em in the Uk... on this site.. Honda's CCT's whether
OEM or not and modified can be troublesome and result in expense for you..good luck

You don't necessarily have to retract the CCT plunger before removal, it just takes the load of the CCT fixing bolts making the job of removing the rear CCT that little bit easier. You will though definitely need to retract the CCT plunger before re-fitting it, that can be done using a small screwdriver in through the end of the CCT body. However if you're going to carry out the Stopper Mod, a locking key is essential IMO.

Note, if the Stopper Mod has already been carried out you will not be able to retract the CCT plunger fully, in fact only a small amount. That is exactly what the Stopper Mod does, in the event of a CCT failure the plunger head cannot fully retract. Providing this mod is done correctly it will stop the valves being smacked by the piston, saving any further damage to the engine.

Locking key dimensions in this link at the bottom:-

I've not seen anything in writing to say the CCT's have ever been upgraded.

Chris.
