Chain Rivetting
Chain Rivetting
Hi,
Bought a tool to break/rivet chains. Having fitted the new chain, I came to rivet the split link, and can't seem to "mushroom" the rivets - should I clout them with a punch of some kind:

Re: Chain Rivetting
Yes they need mushrooming otherwise the chain will come off Try a small ball bearing that is just a bit bigger than the dent. Stick it in the dent with a bit grease then use a G-Clamp to slowly squeeze the ball in which spreads the pin out.
Just make sure the G-clamp is located on the same pin at the back of the chain.
Edit Is that the Yam?

Make sure you don't squeeze the side plate on too far, it should have the same gap as the others or you'll pinch the o ring. You can hold a heavy hammer behind the pin and peen over the pin with a small ball pein hammer. It just needs enough to stop the plate coming off, so it doesn't need to be completely mushroomed over.

Re: Chain Rivetting
if you have brought a tool like you say, that should do it for you.
just make sure you do not squash it to far

Tool has a ball bearing type fitting, but it doesn't seem man enough for the job.bazzashadow wrote:if you have brought a tool like you say, that should do it for you.

Re: Chain Rivetting
Chain fitment guide.
Buy rip off chain tool for £60
Use it to rivet chain.
Look at it and think, no, that's not done to my satisfaction.
Use a lump hammer and a normal hammer to mushroom the ends of the pins.
Throw useless tool away
enjoy thousands of trouble free chain mileage.

Re: Chain Rivetting
I had one of those, the end pieces were made of cheese and the pin cracked.
Re: Chain Rivetting
I have a Bikemaster chain rivet tool, and it does take a fair bit of force to mushroom the pins properly. The service manual gives the specified finished diameter of the flared end, on the VTR with an RK chain it is 5.45-5.85mm.

With chain tools you tend to get what you pay for....
I use this one: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/RK-Chains-Cha ... 35e39bd540
Been using it for around 10yrs now with no issues and still using all of the original bits

Re: Chain Rivetting
Any recommendations for a chain tool without breaking the budget and decent quality. Wont be for regular use, just to do mine and a mates chain.
Cheers
