K and N filters on std bike

Post by eddievtr »

Got my 'Storm dyno'd over the weekend. I fitted a K+N filter when I got it because it has always been an improvement on previous bikes (fuel economy, driveability etc). Imagine my suprise when the dyno showed a massive hole low down, and a drop in power :o . Cleaned out and refit my standard filter, another dyno and hey presto, hole is filled in a bit, with a 3BHP hike at the top end, now putting out a healthy 99bhp at the back wheel :D (I should say that there was a special offer of dyno's for a fiver!)
What they (Jordan's at Leeds) said was that its an 'all or nothing' affair - if you're fitting race cans, best to go the whole hog and fit K+N and rejet, in spite of what the can manufacturer says. If not, leave well alone!

I'll put the dyno up inthe gallery if anyone is interested
Ohlins shock, Goodridge lines, 6-pot calipers, carbon fibre hugger.....and all at someone else's expense!!

Yeah,
the gallery is giving a "white out" at the mo. Thought it was my security settings at home last night untill i got the same in work today.

BTW If you want to run a std Storm with a K&N filter you would have got better results if you had put a 0.6 mm washer under the needles to give them a bit more lift. it would have filled in that hole you mentioned lower down.

i'm off to Belfast area at the end of Feb to have my bike set up on a dyno, had a jet kit for a while and my K&N just arrived in the post today, so hopefully not going to have any probs with the set up, i've got Quill T3 cans on as well, so it'll be interesting to see what happens.

i was going to ask for any opinions of filters eg- K&N versus the likes of Pipercross who i think make a full panel filter as opposed to the half panel type that K&N use, or even if there were any other ones that poeple had used.

in the end i just went the usual route and got K&N :?

will keep you all posted on the results when it happens.

Bugger I just cut out my paper element to my filter last nite and threw it in the bin as I'm gonna replace it with some pipercross foam. I've got the jet kit for the storm, just missing some cans now.

I could fit the needles and see if helps with the dip.
Just mashed my bike flipped it from a wheelie :o(

a friend uses the dyno, he has friends over there, we are heading over together, he's getting some more work done on his bandit1200.

its in the garage of x tt racer Phill McCallen so looking forward to meeting the man as much as anything.

i think there are only one or two dyno's in scotland, one around perth area if memory serves, and one over edinburger/livy way.

Hi Max
I use BlakeMoor Racing in Bristol
He's on 0117 9042216.
Tim's the guy. Nice bloke with plenty of free advise.

Are you having a problem or is it just a check?

Yikes!!
Now you're asking something. It's not the easiest place to find. It's only 10 minutes off the first junction from the M32.
You go through Downend to Staple hill and take Soundwell Rd towards Kingswood. Halfway along Soundwell Rd you come to some swimming baths, take the next right and at the bottom is an old industial estate. He's around the back of the estate.
I can give some better directions if you need it (I'll have to dig out my old A-Z first) or if I'm free I'll meet you just off the M32 and give you an escort if you like.

BTW Last spring he was charging £30 for a diagnostic run. He gets quite busy so book a time before you turn up.

When the bike is back on the road I'll give him a ring. A friend of mine used to go to soundwell college. so I have a rough idea of where you are, is that speedwell swimming pool?. unless i can find a dyno closer to home i will have to come up some time. I'll let you know.

Okay Max,
The offer is always open.
The swimmiing baths are the Soundwell swimming baths about 200 yrds before you turn off to the colledge so your spot on for location. Happy hunting for a closer one.
