Sidestand sensor

Post by Harry Growler »

Hi all, need to pick your collective brains if possible,

I think i've got a dodgy side stand sensor. I'll get the bike out of the garage in the morning for work. I get it started and let it warm up for a couple of minutes and then I put it in gear and it cuts out. I'll start it again and ride it to the end of the drive and then it'll cut out again. Usually after that it's ok but on a bad morning it'll get to the next junction (about 600 yards down the road) and it'll cut out as i'm slowing down, causing the back wheel to lock briefly. No more after that but thats bad enough. It will miss occasionally while cruising at a constant speed but that may be plugs.

Anyone got any info for me on this?

Cheers all

Firstly dont leave the bike warming up on the side stand...it's not recomended as there may be oil feed issues to the top end when lent over.

Secondly dont bother warming it up, start it & ride off just dont give it big handfulls till it's warmed up a bit.

Thirdly whats your tick over set at ? You want it set between 1200 & 1500, adjust with the thumb screw on the front carb right hand side, you can see it if you look in just in front of the coolant catch tank. With the bike running turn it & the revs will rise or fall depending on what direction you turn it...IIRC clockwise is revs up...

The kick back & stall is 'carb fart' the carbs blowing back into the air box, feels like the tank is being hit...again raise the tick over a smidge.

The sidestand cut out should only kick in if the stand is down when you put it in gear, it will cut out straight away. If you really think thats the issue then I have several spares should you need one.

You have only just bought this correct ? Time for a service maybe, Plugs, air filtter & Carb balance may be in order if you dont know when last done...esp the carb balance.
Making up since 2007, sometimes it's true...Honest...

Good point about warming it up leant over, i hadnt thought of that.

The tickover is just below 1000rpm so I'll adjust it up and see if that makes it any better. Hopefully it will.

I'll also sort out a service for it as I have indeed just bought the machine and I don't know when it was last done,

Many thanks for the advice :)
