water /coolant leak

Post by samwell600 »

Hi all , i have been out for a ride today it was quite spirited . when i got back there was a small amount of water in the bellypan .the water was blue so also had coolant in it . i checked the expansion bottle and it was over the upper limit (i checked it when it was cool and it was to the same mark .i have looked and its coming from near the front just over 3/4of the way up the belly pan . i was wondering though its the first wet day ive ridden could some water be coming back up from the front wheel through the belly pan ? thanks in advance

Greetings

Look closer - is it coming from a hole or spigot at the front of the engine case near the starter motor. If so, and it's more than likely, that your water pump gasket/seal behind the clutch cover has failed - it leaks out from a specially crafted place so water doesn't spurt into the oil in the crankcases.

Best not ride it till it's fixed.

Just look behind the front wheel into the front of the bike at the front engine cases above where you say the belly pan is filling wih coolant. Early models have a simple hole and later models have a small protuding spigot.

Think of it like your prostate leaking pee everywhere - do you go to work, with a towel down your pants in the hope it'll go away or do you book an appointment with a long fingered doctor ASAP?

Try getting on your hands & knees and shining a torch on the front of the engine cases where the clutch cover joins onto the crankcases where the hole is to confirm.

The fix is a mechanical seal set 19217-MAL-300, Oil seal 91291-965-000, bearing 96100-6200300

Best fitted by a Honda workshop as the new seal needs precisely pressing in. If you do ride it be very careful as slippery coolant could get onto your rear tyre and with the loss of coolant you could risk damaging the engine - so only ride it a short distance to a place that can fix it.

The expainsion bottle has an overflow pipe on it & that route's out on the left of the bike at the front. On a std storm bikini fairing a buch of overflow & vent pipes all gather together in the same spot.

Is it leaking coolant from a hose or from the weep hole?
