Oil level sight glass

Post by Duffy1964 »

I need to get my engine casings powder coated for my fighter project, but the powder coater owner said I need to remove the water pump bearing and the oil sight glass as they will get damaged in the shot blaster.

the bearing looks easy enough, but how do you remove the oil sight glass?

Will I need to replace the seal and if I feck it up can I still get all the components easy enough?

Cheers Duffy

Well it must come out coz it went in, in the first place...At a guess I would say some sort of clip on the inside holding it in & the seal would/should come out to...but surley it can be masked up prior to shot blasting...
Making up since 2007, sometimes it's true...Honest...

No visible clip Mac, looks like it may be threaded or pressed in, but don't want to feck it up as it looks flimsy.
The blaster is high pressure and he didn't want to risk it even though I had masked it up, he recons it will shatter or pepper so bad you would not see through it.

It just presses in, try to push it out with a socket or similar resting on the outer rim, not the glass.
EDIT*
I can't remember if it pushes out from inside out or from outside in.....sorry, it was a long time back, and my head's still spinning from today's Dementia training course.
I seem to recall it was obvious when you looked at it.
If you're not sure I have a cracked one you can practise on.

They do look nice when powder-coated- I did one a few years back.

Good suggestion, that would work, with a bit of silicon sealer to hold it in place. Suggest that you drill it in the centre before fitting it and fill the hole with sealer, too, and you can then extract it with a screw or stud extractor when it's coated.
Or tap and thread it.

Make sure you clean the grit out of the back of the sight glass well afterwards, or it'll end up in the oil.....

Good point Tony, he was also worried about the seal due to heat process, but I would have thought a hot engine was what they were designed for.

Amazing what a fertile imagination can get up to with an old half-can of underseal found in a drawer in the back of his grandad's garage....but as far as I know he never did get the lit-up innards from an old Battling Top to fit properly on the clutch basket.
