Misfire under load

Post by StuartWags »

I had a call from a chap I sold a storm to about a year back. He was looking for some advice on an issue. The RR and battery fried, the RR was an aftermarket one . He replaced those. He if left will another issue that though that may or may not be related. It was described as a hesitation and rough running when riding and on the power.

Sounded to me like the classic sign of fuel starvation. I suggested checking all the usual suspects, tap on, vacuum line, water / cr@p in the carbs etc.

However, I did wonder if there is any chance that a failed RR could result in frying the coils …. Any ideas?

PS the bike was based on the leftovers from Chris's US/UK project

The R/R pictured above even though finned looks probably a 'Hong Kong' cheapy version. edit. looks like this US aftermarket version

Honda OEM upgraded R/Rs usually come SH marked > http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Honda-CBR1100 ... Sw5ZBWIjp-

If it fried the battery then it could have also, as you've guessed, damaged other electrical components inc black boxes CDI etc. Also worth going through the charging system connectors/wiring and making sure it's all clean, corrosion free and properly earthed.

Hopefully they've replaced the R/R with something decent (MOSFET) to avoid it reoccurring.

It may be that your whole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.

He could try cutting 1/2" off the end of the HT leads where they enter the spark plug caps and reconnecting them, I have heard of those causing issues, especially the front one,

Chris.

Check the vac hose at the petcock end. They can crack & spilt. Replace with new or trim 1/4 inch off end.
