How to remove a snapped cam cover bolt. Hope it helps

Post by Flatline »

Doing the valve clearances, everything going smoothly, get some shims from Tony

All back in and tightening up the cam cover bolts and snnnnnap. baldrocks

Probably going to be a nightmare as its so small. Ah well here goes. Use dremel with a cone shaped grinding head to make a start point for a drill bit

Image

High quality drill bit goes through nice a easy

Next is a small extractor

Voila! Can't believe it came out so easily

Use a tap to clean up the threads

That is a stud extractor holding the tap........the tap was not long enough to allow me to use the normal handle

So a bit of lateral thinking got the job done

Screws in nicely

Now to get a new bolt

if you use a bit of Grease that helps and also the swarf sticks to the drill etc.
missing the noise, not the vibes. However never say never!

nice one flatty

2 added hints.

a) to ensure that no swarf works its way into the engine, cover all the rags with grease before you stuff then into all the cavities, and then add more grease to the exposed metal edges round the edge of the rages. once you finished drilling first hoover up the loose swarf, but then everything else will be stuck to the grease so wont fall into the engine when you remove the rags.

b) once the cam bolt snaps, it is not under tension [and it is covered in oil so it isn't corroded] so it will come out fairly easily. I have used a small punch and a hammer to gently knock the broken stump round in a CCW direction and out it comes, the way the bolt fractures you will not have a flat surface and there will always be a small notch for you to get your punch to grip against.
failing that run your cordless drill in reverse [and slowly] with a drill slightly smaller than the stud and the friction will start to unscrew it.

Add tip b above, so call it B.5 :D
When doing the above, use a left hand bit in the drill... the cutting action will "grip" and unscrew the fastener end most times and if not, you're all set for the extractor

Yep, unfortunately it was a torque wrench, which had done the other 3 no problem

I assume it was time for the bolt to snap

If you mean the big one that looks like a socket, Machine Mart

You get 4 in a box

Which helps to remove these sort of nuts when they get "rounded"

Because this doesn't work!!
