I do remember him in 'Our Freinds in the North' playing a laid off Miner at the height of the strikes...brill series...

I'd forgotten both Our Friends in the North and him in it. Agree, totally ace telly. Great character in Porridge

He also featured in the 1993 Merchant Ivory movie adapatation of the novel Remains of the Day as Anthony Hopkins's dad.
