Is there a special tool for compressing the valve springs?

Yes.
You need a wide throat one, Halfords do one for about 40 quid which is good.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Make sure you have a stick magnet too so you can easily remove the collets once the spring is compressed down. When putting the collets back in place use a bit of grease on them so they stick in position around the valve while slowly releasing the tension on the spring.
