well here goes. VTR cranks... i need one. or rather i just want the end of one, the end the flywheel mounts to... ..

by the way if anybody has a wrecked one let me know. but say i find one how the hell would you chop the end of? its kinda hard old stuff..i need the end so i can use it for a mandrel to mount flywheels??

ok iv checked the bay of E.. cranks are everywere...


so main question is, anybody ever cut the end of a crank??

Grinding wheel? Disk cutter? Just don't try a hacksaw....

Putting the new Lathe to action then. Shame you didn't purchase a computerised CNC cutting machine could have made some real useful stuff then You going to have to make sure that everything is balnced and squared up properly if doing flywheels. I'm trying to think what else you could make with the Lathe. How about a nice Yoke nah just egging you on

think id be needing more that a lathe for top yokes .

ay once i get it here i will see if its able to do flywheels on it. il clock the bearings on it and make sure its not wobbling like a jelly . it should do the stuff im looking like spacers and small light work. im hoping its good enough to do the flywheels. iv a few orders here pending already. if it works il trial them on my own engines before i go wrecking somebody else's engine...

Yes I have, but Im guessing you knew that....
I used an abrasive wheel in an air motor.
Good high quality wheel from 3M and it took two, in a powerful Snap on 1hp cut off tool.
It can be done with lessor tools and cheap wheels, but just be ready to take your time and have a hand full of cut off wheels.
In hind sight I could have used a 7" abrasive blade in portable electric saw motor or maybe even mounted it to the chop saw table and used that.
But it was pretty easy to use the air cut off tool.

well i am about to find out, i have a crank on its way to me so soon as it lands il get a chopping

Hi Fab, just read the post, I've had a look for the crank mandrel in the shed but can't find it.

I've found the puller bolt but no crank mandrel, I'll have another root around tomorrow.

BTW, I cut the tail off with a 9" grinder & cutting disc, just make sure the crank is held securely in case it grabs & shatters the cutting disc

One of the issues with using a crank end as a mandrel is after cutting it off you have a small area available to clamp in the chuck.
Before I had proper tooling made I had considered welding on some solid bar to the end of the crank mandrel, chucking the mandrel at the original bit and truing/turning turning the new section to size...

yeah iv noticed you end up a bit tight on that end for holding. look a bit of time to true it up but got there in the end thankfully then the rest was easy
