VTR1000.ORG

Just bought my second VTR. This one is more of a project though as it's a bit rough.

The cans are fubar'd so will need replacing or remaking, the bodywork isn't too hot so a change of colour will probably happen whilst it's being done.
It will get braided hoses as a matter of course.
I'd like to street-fighter it but VTR's usually look strange with the side-mounted rads though I suppose I could put one big one up front.
Keep tuned. There will undoubtedly be some uber-clever fab-work along the way as it's a stablemate for my twin-turbo '38 ford project:

First thing on the agenda is exhaust cans.
The ones on (and mostly off) the bike were some kind of aftermarket things that rotted away so need replacing.
Being as everything I do is (by necessity) on a really short budget I bought these for a whole $50NZ (about 25 quid):



They are from a KAwasaki 1400 and are hugely long, but nothing that a grinder and a dab of TIG won't cure!

Couple of tryout bits. Not 100% sure though.

First off, double-bubble screen left over from my old Fireblade parts bin. Needs to be at a steeper angle but you get the picture.



Also from the 'blade. Rear seat fairing and single seat hump. Fits remarkably well so it might just stay!

Anything is better than the lardy - looking std storm tail plastic.

Will do. I think I've talked myself into the 'blade seat & hump, but for now here's the ubiquitous streetfighter Renthals & clamps.
I'll machine up some spacer blocks to make them look cool!

All the controls fit OK. I've re-routed the throttle cables around the back of the forks and they work/clear even on full LH lock.
Clutch and brake hoses will need making longer, but as I work for a HEL agent I don't think that's a problem



On to headlights. They have to be twins right? I'm sure it says so in the gGreat Book of Streetfighter.
These are from an FZR250, so much nicer than the aftermarket Chinese sh*te. Fully adjustable etc, and at $50NZ for two sets I couldn't say no.



They need to go back by 120mm and up by about 40mm but you get the idea!

The Blade rear end looks good

Gauges moved up by about 40mm,



But the lights couldn't be put back far enough because of the interference of this:



The bit to be cut marked with tape.
After some cutting, reinforcing and TIG welding:





And everything fits!
the lights are now more-or-less where I want them. I've only made the top mounts so far, the lights will have lower mounts as soon as I've finalised their position.

Time to cut them up and see what's inside!
With the end cap off, and the outer tube cut down it reveals a giant baffle:



And baffle tubes for Britain (though this is in New Zealand.....)





So I'm now left with a 2/3rds long silencer can, some hacked out baffles, an inner end cap and an outer end can;
