I would think the rubber would start to get brittle and go bad.

is it leaking or are you planning to take the cam covers off?

As Tony said you only usually need a light smear of silicone gasket and care to keep the gasket in place when putting the covers back on.

It isn't rubber, of course, and I've not seen one fail. Ever.
To be honest they don't leak even if you don't use silicon, but I've always thought it pays to make sure.
Even the spare ones laying around in my stock shed are still ok, and they've been out in damp air for over five years at least, after ten plus years in an engine!

Whatever they're made of it's good stuff.

Well that's good to know as I'm in the process of rebuilding the bike and have the mcct's ready to go. I had planned on getting new valve cover gaskets as all the decades of me building cars has taught me that older cars valve cover gaskets get hard and break as you remove the cover.

Good to know and do appreciate the reply. I can save a few dollars now when I place my Honda parts order.

I've replaced the gaskets on my ST1100 chasing an oil leak. Turns out the old gasket (from 1990!) was fine, but the only things holding it down to the mating surface are the hold down bolts, and they have rubber washers that do compress over time. That resuls in less clamping force and not enough pressure on the gasket. My advice is to buy new washers for the hold down bolts, you could probably shim the old ones but they are cheap enough. Whatever you do, don't be tempted to just apply more torque to the bolts, by design they are bottomed out when tight, and more tension can only crack the cylinder head casting...

Make sure you fit the washers metal side up.

I've got some MCCT's to fit to my '97 Storm. Thought it would need new gaskets. Not doing the job immediately but looking at what I'm going to need over the winter months.
