1997 VTR not sparklng

Post by Dysfunctional »

Hi All, new here.

My VTR is turning over but not sparking. Checked and cleaned every connection on the wiring connectors and cleaned off any oxidation.

Put iridium plugs into her but no difference. Getting fuel, cleaned side stand switch, checked engine cut-off and all seems good.

Any help appreciated.

Thank you

If you have access to an oscilloscope, you could measure the signals from the pickup and between ICU and converter.

They should look like this when cranking/running:

(If it doesn't start anyway, remove the spark plugs before cranking. The battery will be thankful)

Suspect #1 would be the converter which is quite cheap when bought used.
If you're technically interested and like some more tinkering, you could get rid of the stock ignition and use an Ignitech box.

No. 3&4 are the main control units for the bike. No,3 is known to fail.

Next to check is the coils are you getting a spark ?

Have you had the tank off recently ? If so please make sure that the pipe on the pectcock is fitted to the correct spigot...

Hi,
Sorry for the delay in getting back

I have no spark at all but took off the connectors between the plug and the ignition cable. The front one has 0 ohms but the back one seems to be broken. I wiggled the whole thing and eventually got a reading but then no more after that.
Does the back one have any control over the pair or are they independent?

Thanks 😊

They fire independently. The ignition trigger wheel inside the clutch housing picks up signals for both coils and sends them to the ignition module. The module then sends the correct LT signal to each coil.
Each coil converts to a HT output and sends it to the coil.

So if you have a spark on one only, it won't be the trigger pickup. But it could be the igniter box, more likely a coil.
If you don't have a spark for either plug, the box or a cabling breakdown is most likely.

As you got a signal when you wiggled a wire, that seems to be the best starting point for further investigation.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

It "sounds" like you're talking about measuring the HT coils primary sides. If that's the case the reading should be something under 1 Ohm (haven't got the exact value in mind).
Depending on the range you set on your meter, that max show as 0 on the display - try again with the lowest measuring range.

Front and rear HT coil are independent and have separate connectors. If one fails (for example due to broken cable in the harness) the bike can still start.

If you measured something else it'd be helpful to describe where the plug is located, which colors are there and maybe add a pic.
Without that we'd have to use our crystal balls instead of the wiring diagram.
