Just bought a 97 VTR. When pulling away letting the clutch out at around 3000revs bike seems to launch forward before clutch is released. It doesnt happen all the time just now and again. Could it be an airlock problem in clutch fluid ??

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

tks

Firstly - Don't panic

Mine did exactly the same for 18months before I finally got round to fixing it

The problem is the clutch springs are too weak so as you engage drive by letting the clutch out it grips a bit, then the plates bounce apart before engaging fully

Solutions:
1. Pull of using less revs and then wind on the power once the clutch is fully out
or
2. Replace the clutch springs and while you've got the bike open take a fine file to the edges of the clutch basket so that the plates are sliding on a nice smooth surface, not one with a few faint ridges in it which happens naturally over time

If you need any more info, 'how to' etc let me know

Thanks for replying. When changing clutch springs, would you recommend also doing the plates and is it a big job or could I do it myself.

Its a bit quiet on here at the minute (with summer being here :D ) so answers are a bit slower than normal :!:

I would say as for doing the job yourself, will depend on how mechanically minded you are :!:
