Clicking From Chain

Is this caused from an unoiled or improperly oiled chain it seems everytime I pull away in 1st I hear the clicking Higer gears are ok. how often do you oil your chain.

The clicking could be a stiff link.

But a friend has got a TLs that clicks/ kluncks when you pull away in first, it has had a very hard life. The bike shop traced it to free play in a worn output shaft in the gear box. The bike rides fine and he is still going mad on it.
