OMG!
Really sorry to hear that
For various reasons (see foot of my signature) I have been a fatelist for some time now (not bike related).
I firmly believe that things happen unavoidably ... OK OK I know there's likely to be replies negating what I've just said, but it's what I believe.
All the Ifs, buts & maybes and with the benefit of hindsight doesn't change anything, no matter how hard we wish it, believe me I've tried it.
Praying, yeah, praying helps, to whatever superior being you believe in if any. It must do cos people say it does. Not sure how it helps, tried it, didn't notice any difference.
We can do things to keep ourselves safe, we could stay at home wrap ourselves in bubblewrap (sounds kinky), but then we'd just die couch potatoes or grow old bitterly wishing we'd done this, that and the other, like the poor 71 year old guy quoted today in an earlier post who waited till his wife had died to ride a bike!

'Carpe diem' - get out there and enjoy life as best you can! it isn't a bloody rehearsal.
The organiser I'm sure will be full of regret, doubt and self blame (been there, got that t-shirt). What they need to think about is why they organised it in the first place.
To help people just like the poor guys who suffered last weekend. All the more reason to get more fundraising done by whatever means.
That's what they were doing it cos they believed in it and doing the ride gave them an opportunity to raise money doing something they loved, or else why do it?
Here endeth the first lesson
