DVLA set of Gay lords!
was just looking for information on a quad god knows why
but it appears you need a car lisence to ride one, okay its got four wheels, but they have more in common with a bike than a car. thorw a car driver on a quad and im sure they would be lost, thow a biker on and im sure they would be at home, yes handlebars no wheel
also i see a trike requires a car lisence?
yet a motrbike with a side car (which would also have or require 3 wheels) doesnt!

Did you know you can drive a Reliant 3 Wheeler on a bike license if reverse gear is blanked off?
what the hell has reverse got to do with it? some bikes have a reverse fitted.

I think you'll find that it's either a full car or a full bike licence that is required. It depends on who you talk to at the dvla or what traffic cop you deal with.
When I was working as a bike instructor we spent months tryingt to gett a diffinitive answer from the dvla and plod. End result full car or bike

You do not have to say anything. But it may harm your defence if you do not mention when posting something which you later rely on in quote. Anything you do say may be ripped to sh*t.

Re: DVLA set of Gay lords!
I thought it was to do with the width of the rear axle
.
I.e if you made a trike our of a vw beetle rear axle you could get away with a bike licence but if you used a jag axle it had to be a car licence.
Mind you, that's going back to when I was in my teens. we've got paper, and fire and all sorts of good stuff now

Re: DVLA set of Gay lords!
I was always under the illusion it changed to a weight based system with trikes and quads and if it was under a certain axle weight it was considered a bike and if it was over then it was a car. The thing that makes me think more is the fact you see quads going around and the riders with no helmet half the time as they think it is considered a car but you never see them wearing a seat belt! got to be one or the other in my opinion... helmet for the lighter side of things and a seatbelt for the heavier bikes or theoretically it's breaking the law if the weight idea/route is correct.
I hate laws in this kind of thing... or even sometimes lack of them.

Why ask... sometime you just go to do it and find out?
Re: DVLA set of Gay lords!
Personally I think it is a TASTE based system. After all, who in their right f*cking mind wants to ride/drive a bloody trike, much less a plastic pig (Reliant Robin).
As a biker and a man of most excellent taste I am glad if trikes/Robins were restricted to cagers

Re: DVLA set of Gay lords!
I can completely see the point in trikes tbh.
I've know a bloke who was a keen biker. Unfortunately he lost use of his legs in a work related accident
He's now looking at a Can Am Spider or similar.

I dont think riding a bike gives you much of an advantage over a car driver when riding quad. The first time you jump on one the biker in you causes all sorts of fook ups! Its not natural to a biker (well not me anyway) its more like riding a gocart with suspension.

Not sure Tim? It could well be???Timbo wrote:JB - would this be the guy i have seen at Squirts who turns up on a trike with a wheelchair on the back?
What do you think to the concept?

Re: DVLA set of Gay lords!
I had a Reliant Supervan a long while back, before I'd passed me car test.
Loads more fun to handbrake turn than a car, real scary.
And the best bit was driving it in the snow, front wheel lurched from one wheeltrack to the other, being in the middle and catching all the slush frozen in the middle....
But you get glass fibre splinters when fixing them, less funny.
Good laugh, though, as long as you don't take it seriously.
Bit like sidecars, really.

It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.
