bike decay

Post by pikeman »

Was just thinking, how come i can leave my car outside all year, never wash it, not cover it in protective oil yet it does not rot or the finish deteriorate, the brakes doent seize up ? Yet i fear if i treated my bike the same it would erode in front of me. Given bikes are beginning to cost nearly as much as a car why is this? is it inferior quality bits?

or have a good poke about underneath after a few winters of salt & caked shite.
when you look at a car you see the nice shiny paintwork & hoovered interior (unless it's mine)
underneath they are usually fkt.
at least with the bike you can get at most of the stuff and a good jetwashing gets it off.
all the bits that can seize, you should be maintaining anyway, brake pistons, swing arm bushes etc

have to agree though, i don't think the standard of finish on (most) bikes is as good as their 4 wheeled rivals, like alloy bits when the lacquer flakes off, wheels that corrode, exhaust crome that dulls & rusts... you listening mr honda?

Don't mind them falling apart, gives me something to do at the weekend.

Also the odd restoration project, when someone's said "that's too far gone, you'll never get it back on the road" is just a red rag/bull interface.

Anyway, if it never rotted, you wouldn't be able to go to the mrs and have her believe you when you tell her it's getting old and dangerous and it's time you had a new one.

And that's an upgrade opportunity. (Race parts are cheaper, not just lighter).

Mind you, my mrs thinks I'm old and dangerous.......mostly to the joint bank account these days, to be fair....
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.
