Light knocking noise from rear cylinder

Post by boris44 »

Hi, my bike has done 26k, I had the CCT's replaced at 16k just because I was aware of all the horror stories. My bike has now developed a light knock/rattle at tickover from the rear cylinder, thought maybe it was the start of the previously replaced tensioner starting to fail? The noise seems to go off as soon as revs are increased. any Ideas? Thanks :?:

Sounds similar to what my bike is doing at the moment but on the front cylinder. I've done the stopper mod on my CCTs now - that wont stop the rattle but it will stop terrible things happening should the CCT let go completely. Have a look at these posts for instructions:

My only other suggestion would be to check the valve clearances which is a pretty straight forward job - though that noise wouldn't disappear if you pick the revs up. Still worth doing though. Might be worth use something like a big screwdriver as a stethoscope to get a clearer idea where the noise coming from.

i bet you have your tickover set at around 850 - 900 rpm?
turn it up a bit & most of the minor unexplained noises go away

Blimey. I'd have a problem if I set my tickover that low (ignore the other engine behaviour problems mentioned in another column). The problem is if you shut the throttle quickly the engine revs drop below the normal tick-over speed and the engine stalls. I find 1200 rpm is about right for 'my' tickover.

I think new CCT's are less durable than the original factory ones due to arriving in the packets after a considerable time fully compressed etc. So, I'd change it and do the spacer mod as per Sirch's instructions!!!!

Cheers guy's, my tick over is set to about 1200rpm, I think I might opt for a new pair of cct & get this stopper mod done at the same time just in case. Don't know if it's worth trying the ape style tensioners instead of factory ones?

get a pm off to rider on a storm for some of his cct's - theyre better than apes imo and he's doing them cheaper, 2 week wait but tbh you'll probably wait that long for apes.

another worry off your mind
