plastics

Post by Darknomad »

hi all wanted to talk about doing up the plastics
as recently my bike was on its side it was stable on a paddock stand but came home to find she fell over
any way thing is i have damaged plastics both sides now other side was already cracked and tatty
is it better to replace with new get the current ones repaired resprayed?
go for race farings?
im after the inexpensive option
as im not very rich atm
if i go repairs how much in an estimation for reps of side panels
and resprays of each panel as it will need it all done to make it match
news are a couple hundred quid each and will probs need spraying as years of sun will of faded the original yellow im sure
iknow bugger all about this so a good old banter of options is needed
and yes im still thinking of keeping her yellow

There's an article in the May issue of Performance Bikes where they buy a Chinese set of plastics and are pleasantly surprised at how good they are, easy to fit, accurate holes, etc. The paint isn't quite as good as standard, but not really noticeable except in direct comparisons.

However, AFAIK there isn't a set offered for Storms, but the SP1 set should be a relatively easy adaptation.
You'll probably need to adapt/bodge the SP1 front support frame to match. and make some small brackets to support it, but then you can fit the twin headlight...

Otherwise, there are a few companies that offer a repair/respray service, contact details in MCN every week, and some local to you. too.

To get a good colour match you'll either need to get the full set resprayed or buy new/secondhand matching ones, you may notice colour differences with a freshly sprayed one in standard factory colours compared to a slightly-faded set on your bike.

Lastly, yellow Storms came in two quite different shades, so be careful about E-Bay ones.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

free postage??? thats actually quite a good deal tbh assuming the quality is ok?
cant be any worse than buying cracked & scuffed used ones and less than the price on one new oem side.
i'd suggest making a sensible offer and ask the seller to put a low dollar value and mark as gift to keep the tax down, but saying that, ive never been hit with import tax on anything from china, but every time when ordering from usa.

well worth looking into id say.
looking at the feedback comments, seems pretty unanimous.
"Great product. Fairly fast shipping for int'l. Pieces fit to OEM near perfect A+"

Bought my SP1 a few months ago. It was a track bike and has been dropped on RHS.
Decided not to buy new plastics and set to work with soldering iron and plastic coat hanger. The result is a serviceable, but not too pretty close up.
Since I'm only insured third party and there's a fair chance of me dropping it (like my last one) and I only paid £1800 for it anyway, I couldn't see the point of buying new until I really have to.

All in all I'm pleased with the result and it makes bugger all difference to the performance!
She's my idea of beauty and thats what I ride.

If you read the whole ad properly.......I'm sure that even the less popular yellow hues are in their extensive paint library of some 300.
