I'm sort of helping (in way) an X Girlfriends young boy with getting a bike.
He was quite taken with bikes after I used to take him down to the coast on the back of my bike when he was 13 ish, and he's 16 now.
Anyway, just to say, how utterly stupid the price of 50cc mopeds/scooters are now.
Seems you are looking at least at £500 ish to get almost anything and between £500 and £1000 to get something that's in reasonable condition.
You could then go nearer the £2000 mark for something almost new!
I've just seen a 2001 Scooter for about £850 for sale, sheesh, not much more and you could buy a secondhand firestorm!
It just seems mad the price of these 50cc things, and also 125cc things as well. So the same money you could get a 500cc, 650cc, 850cc type bike with just a few more miles on the clock and still in perfect shape as opposed to a 50cc thing that's totally shagged out from having 2, 3 or 4 16 year olds having been riding it flat out for the past few years.
Crazy man, just crazy !!!!

98% of all Harleys ever sold are still on the road. The other 2% made it home

Thanks for the advice.
As he's not "my family" I am staying out of the actual selection of a bike as such.
Like when you mend someone's computer. If you get involved with buying or selecting something, and then when something goes wrong, or needs doing, you are by default either the person responsible or deemed the one that will sort out any issues.
So, whilst I'm happy to generally point him to things, I'm not getting specifically involved.
My age is the problem, I remember buying my Moped (in the FS1E days) for a couple of hundred quid (I think mine was £299 actually)
Whilst, in reality I know with inflation ect, mopeds are not really any more expensive, I can't help but look at a new scooter for £2000 in a shop and almost feint on the spot !!!
I remember being able to buy a grand new, superb looking Suzuki GS1000S back in the "Superbike" days for £1500 brand new from the "Heron Suzuki" dealership.

I guess I find it hard to accept a 50cc scooter today costs more than that did a few (well quite a few!) years ago.

!

keep looking.
a mate just got a mint sr50 aprilia scoot for £300 and another got a pug streetfighter for 120.
just keep your eyes peeled for a bargain.
suggest you use gumtree too and scour the spares section on ebay cos if it wont start or is damaged the cheaper ones will be in as spares & repairs, not in the main bikes & scooters for sale bit.
geared bikes do tend to fetch higher price but ive seen a fair few for peanuts, may want a bit of tlc but you get what you pay for.
You do not have to say anything. But it may harm your defence if you do not mention when posting something which you later rely on in quote. Anything you do say may be ripped to sh*t.
Re: 50cc mopeds - Stupid Prices
Got a brand new (3 miles) ) direct Bikes 50cc ped for sale; never been registered so will be on latest plate when done.
Black, automatic, bought for the twins to share but they want 125's.
PM me if interested, I'd be after £350 as it stands, £450 if registered in my name but then you'd be the second owner...
Top box and screen as standard.

It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

I have a livid son, seems he really, really, did want it but hadn't quite got round to saving any money for the insurance, got a job, done his CBT or thought about how he'd put petrol in it.....T
