most probably yes you have imploded a CCT.

Do not try and start the bike. Time to get stripping to work out how much damage it has caused and the parts needed to fix - Try searching here for the possible extent of damage and remedies i.e manual CCTs
It may be that your whole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.

Sorry to hear about your problem Joe, it certainly does sound like one of the CCT's has failed.

Take a look at this link before starting to strip the bike down if you're going to be doing the job yourself:-

That's 'cause it's the end of Spring.

joe,
as others have said, sounds like bad news on CCT's. there have been at least 2 of the guys who had this happen this year who got away without valve damage, but sadly they are the minority. as wicky said.....DONT TRY AND RESTART that is when the damage will occur, as the chain jumps when you stop the engine!

if the worst has happened, then you will have to have the cyl head removed [99.9%sure it will be front], and you will need to pay for 2 at least 2 new valves and a cyl head gasket.

it is a job many thought was beyond them, but with coaching from the forum members they were able to do it and get their bikes back on the road for minimal cost. key is to read the instructions and ask if not sure.

where are you based, one of us might be near and can help, or as with others we can offer phone support

First I thought this was a comment that the sudden spate of failures was because the bikes are all comming out after winter hibernation, but then knowing tony's love of word play, i fear it is the CCT spring that you are talking about as well............groan

Oh wait, read the ad again, and it is 2 rear cylinder heads and one front, probably not what you need.

There are engines on ebay every so often, but be careful, I saw a post on here a few weeks ago about someone selling an engine with an obvious crack on the mounting points....I have no idea why, but someone said that it meant it was unusable so best to avoid it. Make sure you check out the engine in person before you buy.

Ideally check compression, even if the engine's out it'll still turn over on the starter motor if you connect a battery with jump leads, which will be enough to see if it's ok.
That way you'll know if it has damaged valves or pistons/rings.

I'd pay up to £300 for a proven good one with low mileage, if it's complete, local and undamaged, as you can then sell the clutch cover and get some money back, and possibly the alternator and cover as well.
Even better if it comes with a starter motor and carbs!

Later engines have the heads for a PAIR system on, which can be blanked off if you don't have this on yours.

You could rebuild your engine, with new mains and big end bearings, crank, rods, pistons, heads and head gaskets.
Even with second hand parts you'll spend more than £300.
But if you want to, I have crank, rods, pistons and rings for £50 plus carriage; all you'd need is another head, head gasket and the main and bottom end bearings, probably no more than£150 all in.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.
